Firstly the design of the head must be finalized. In this chapter you can see what the original design concept looks like and compare that with the final design.
A brief overview of the tools used to create Leon's armature including the epoxy and wires.

This chapter looks at the creations of Leon's armature from the wire and the use of epoxy to hold it all together.

Getting the bulk of the creatures model ready for sculpting. Techniques used save on clay and reduce the weight of the creature model.

Another brief overview of the different sculpting tools used throughout the process.

Leon begins to take shape as we watch the sculptor add clay to the base model.

Working from rough form, Leon's shape is progressively refined. Musculature is now added and the form is fleshed out.

In this sculpting pass, all the smaller forms like tendons and muscle strands are added. Further refinement is added across the whole body.

Leon's feet are meticulously sculpted with a certain style in mind. The sculptor uses several different tools to mold the delicate areas around the toes and nails.

After the forms are completely fleshed out, excess clay is gently brushed off with a serrated tool that smoothes the surface.

Leon's head is fleshed out. First in rough form, so different designs can be quickly tested before choosing the final look.

After making the final design choice, Leon's face is detailed. His mouth and face are modeled with tiny tools. Beads are added as eyeball placeholders.

Now that the head is fleshed out, the sculptor goes over the entire model again with a serrated tool to refine the shape and smooth it out.

To give the clay a smooth, slimy look, it is heated with a small alcohol torch. Small details can now be etched into the surface as the clay becomes pliable under heat.

Skin texture and other details are added to the surface of the clay. Small chunks of clay are added to simulate knobby warts and other disgusting details.

Leon's teeth are modeled from small pieces of clay and baked to make them rigid. Then they are carefully placed into his mouth and positioned.

Because the clay cools quickly (dependant on the temperature of the studio), the surface must be repeatedly heated in order to etch in the final details.

The alligator / dinosaur-esque skin texture is delicately carved into the surface.

More detail is added to the mouth region. The tooth cavities are refined even more.

The sculptor draws the skin texture across the arm, paying special attention to the back of the elbow.

Skin texture is added down into the foot and the toenails.

The skin texture is brought across the chest and special attention is a given to the nipple region.

The sculptor turns the model around to give us a final look at the model as it is before the painting begins.

Before the model is airbrushed it needs a full coat of primer.

Leon's first coat of paint is applied to get the general color. Further color refinements and detailing occur after this.

We can watch as the sculptor adds the color detailing around Leon's legs. He carefully paints the colors to follow the sculpting details.

The sculptor adds more detail to important areas like the eyes.

Finally, Leon's sculpture is finished. Now it is ready to be sent to the laser scanning department where his body will be digitized into a 3d mesh.
This DVD covers the creation of Leon's masterfully crafted clay sculpture. It runs over two hours and will give you a complete inside look at the creation of a high-end creature model. After modeling and detailing are complete, you can watch as the sculptor airbrushes Leon's color textures.

The finished model was laser scanned and resurfaced to be rigged for animation inside Alias Maya. Leon's detail is captured into an extremely high resolution displacement map that is later applied at render time. Leon's paint job was captured in the form of digital pictures that serve as reference material inside Photoshop where the final color texture maps were created.
